Your UK healthcare application guide.
A practical reading checklist for applicants overseas and in the UK. Reviewed 16 September 2026; re-check official sources before acting.
Start with the job you are qualified to do.
A healthcare job title, an employer’s licence and a strong CV do not by themselves establish visa eligibility. Your genuine duties, employer, pay, registration and personal circumstances matter. ResumeStation.io is an independent preparation tool, not the NHS, UKVI, a recruiter or an immigration adviser. We cannot secure a job, a Certificate of Sponsorship or a visa.
1. Confirm the occupation and employer
Ask the recruiting employer which occupation code fits the actual duties, whether this post offers sponsorship and whether it qualifies for the Health and Care Worker route. The employer must be approved and meet the route’s health or care employer requirements. A licence alone does not establish eligibility for the reduced-fee healthcare route.

2. Know the restrictions on care roles
New overseas applications for care workers and senior care workers (6135 and 6136) are closed. In-country provisions are limited: one provision requires three months of lawful work for the sponsor and an application before 22 July 2028; existing sponsored care workers have a separate provision. For England, check the CQC requirement and any applicable exception. Do not change a job title to get around these rules.

Healthcare assistant is not a blanket alternative. Code 6131 concerns nursing auxiliaries and assistants in environments where registered nurse or other registered healthcare professional roles also exist. The duties and setting must fit.

3. If you are already in the UK
Check whether your current permission allows switching and working. Visitors and several other categories cannot switch to this route inside the UK. Students have additional conditions. A vacancy or a sponsor promise does not override your existing permission or expiry date.

4. Confirm registration and English evidence
Use the regulator for your profession. Check what must be completed at application, offer and start date; describe your progress truthfully. A pending registration application is not a licence to practise.
- NMC: nurses and midwives trained outside the UK
- GMC: medical registration and licensing
- HCPC: international applications for relevant regulated professions
New visa applications generally require B2 English, with exemptions and different provisions for some existing applicants. Accepted evidence may include an approved test, a qualifying degree or other permitted evidence. Doctors, dentists, nurses and midwives may meet an exemption through an accepted regulator assessment. Check your exact circumstances; regulator and visa rules are not identical.

5. Check the correct pay rule
There is no single salary figure that approves every healthcare job. Ask the employer to confirm the occupation, applicable national pay scale or going rate, annual basic salary, weekly hours and any valid transitional provision. An NHS band or a salary shown in an advert does not by itself settle the visa question.

6. Prepare documents, costs and family plans
Read the official list for your circumstances, including passport and sponsorship information, English evidence and any required financial evidence, tuberculosis test, criminal record certificate or translations. Do not upload identity documents to ResumeStation.io. Keep them for the official application process.

Check current fees, maintenance requirements and the Health and Care Worker surcharge exemption on GOV.UK. Family eligibility depends on occupation and immigration history; do not assume every sponsored role permits dependants.

7. Apply through verified channels
Use the employer’s official recruitment site and check the precise employing entity against the current sponsor register. Ask the employer about the actual vacancy before making relocation plans. Do not pay someone selling a guaranteed job, sponsorship place or visa. Check the recruitment contact through the employer’s published contact details.

Ethical international recruitment rules restrict active recruitment from certain countries; they are not a blanket ban on individuals making permitted direct applications. Check the current code and country guidance. ResumeStation.io provides independent preparation and links, and does not recruit people on behalf of these employers.

Once you have the required offer and sponsorship details, follow the official application route. For advice about your own immigration circumstances, use a regulated adviser.
